Cinemalaya today is an outlet for young aspiring directors and media practitioners to express themselves and to showcase real Filipino experiences through the works of Filipino talents and through the movies. With the rampant and overpowering Western influence present in our culture, we are slowly losing track of the things that are truly us and we are slowly and unconsciously molding ourselves to fit in by trying to put together those two cultures. For some, Cinemalaya is merely an event where independent directors showcase their works because they are unable to show it in the mainstream public. While this description may seem to scratch the surface of what Cinemalaya truly is, it lacks the definition that it reveals to us what we are capable of doing and it lets us take a moment to look at the things that we have neglected due to fascination to the others, curiosity or simply ignorance. It sheds light onto the real happenings that occur in our society and the harsh reality that people usually sugarcoat and hide. These things like poverty, drug abuse, prostitution, political truth, corruption, lack of education and other occurrences are what these independent movies focus on for us to have social awareness. To answer the question, yes. Cinemalaya is still relevant because we Filipinos get to see what our fellow media practitioners can create within our community with a few peso bills, talented artists and a creative mind in their back pocket.
Lets's now hear it from Joross Gamboa, Writer Ricky Lee, and Director Jose Javier Reyes

Director Jose Javier Reyes.
He even gave us free 25tickets for his movie, Mga Munting Lihim
With all the influences being brought to us by the Westerners, it is important for every Filipino to be reminded of who we really are. Moreover, the fact that Cinemalaya gives chance not only to veteran directors to continue creating films but to young and new directors as well already makes it pertinent.
