33rd Manila International Book Fair

Book Fair

The 33rd Manila International Book Fair was held last September 12-16, 2012. When we attended the event, we were surprised by the number of people who filled both the inside and outside of the venue which was the first floor of the SMX Convention Center located near the Mall of Asia (MoA).

Although we were unable to go there all at the same time, we all found time within those four days to spare to be able to sneak a peak into the world of book lovers, enthusiasts and even the authors who went there. During our visits, some of us saw Lourd De Veyra, Ramon Bautista and Tado Jimenez. We were stunned to see the community of Filipinos who not only were interested in reading but also those who were fans of some of the authors.

It’s sad though that we only found out about the Manila International Book Fair this year because of this class. On the bright side though, we were able to see and maybe buy books but also, we will now look forward to attending it next year and hopefully the succeeding years as well.

BBDO GUERRERO, Philippines

Mr. Tony Harris is an English, from UK. Staying for almost 16 months already in our country with his belief that in five years time, our country will be more exciting, imaginative, creative and a stimulating place to live with.
A graduate of Ancient History form a University in England. He’s been working as a Jr. Account Director in a small agency in the year of 1994. He was never really interested in Advertising until such time in 1980, Advertising becomes pretty sexy in the history of England. It’s where people are. It’s where the money is he said. It was a Summer then, while everyone else is busy packing their things up and busy traveling to different places, he searched for a job so he could earn more money and not to waste his time duri
ng his vacation. Fortunately, he found one, just a small agency that is related to Advertising. It’s been actually a not so good start for him because he got hired the time when UK suffered from an Economic Crisis. But even though his start became tough for him, still he endured and persevered.

His degree might be a way far from where he’s into now but one thing that got him in the field of Advertising – his joy of studying things and his passion for his work. He believe that one’s degree or knowledge doesn’t make a person excel in his/her job. It’s the passion, commitment to their work. He said that it’s all about passion and interest. As you become passionate about what you’re doing, the best things from your inner being will just come out naturally.

Living a better life with his choice of sticking to his passion in Advertising, so far, he has now some of the greatest achievement in life. Together with his partner David G. they arrived into the tag line “It’s more fun in the Philippines”. He stressed the tag line as absolutely bloody true. He loved the people in our country except for the fact that nobody in here values punctuality. He believed in the Filipinos a lot. He has this mindset that five years from now Philippines will probably become as one of the biggest and competitive country all over the world depending on the development and improvements of our nation. Life is about either winning or losing so Filipinos got to be quick, he added.

After all, the words of encouragement we’ve heard from him falls into three core values in our life. Nothing but interest, curiosity and most of all, again, the passion. Energy, keep working ladies! He imparted.

The Magic of Magic 89.9

MAGIC 89.9 Today's Best Music

INTERVIEW WITH CJ THE DJ OF MAGIC 89.9
What can you say about the power of radio?

“Not all people can bring their social media devices. For example, tweeting, well listening is better than typing. Radio is also enhanced by social Medias.”

1) How did he start?

-He started on a Student DJ Program from RX Monster Radio at the age of 17/18 years old.

-Upon graduating in De La Salle University AB Communication, he got a better offer from Magic 89.9 and so he left RX and began his journey in Magic.

-It was DJ CJ’s dream to be a radio announcer/DJ someday ever since. And he’s now achieved the said goal, 13 years of experience and currently the Program Director of Magic 89.9. He manages the content of Music and researches the latest songs as well.

What were the difficulties you’ve faced in the field of Radio Prod?

-Difficult Partners: Callers or DJ’s where in he’s the only one making the conversation lively.
-Difficult Band/Guests: Some guests are said to become “super feeler” on air.
-Dealing sometimes with his own emotions such sadness while doing his work.

DJ CJ said the line “I really wanted to be where I am now..” He said he loves his work not for fame or for money but simply because he just wanted what he does.

Perks/Benefits in his work.

-He gets to have the CD’s he wanted to avail whether it is or not available in our country.
-Sponsors!

Qualities we must have if ever we’ll take up Radio Production in third year.
“Equip yourself with confidence or your personality in radio. Amplify your personality a little more and just be yourself. You must have a self expression (verbally your head and your heart towards the listeners). Stock knowledge (people rely on you, they share and they expect for advices as well). Be responsible with whatever you are feeding them. Be updated and keep in touch with everybody. Research, research more..”

Words of wisdom from DJ Cj.

“You must definitely love Music. Improve yourself. Besides the Music, you are also selling yourself to the people. I’m not asking you to change the way you are now but to just enhance it.. Patience of course..”

Individuality

In a world where everyone is in a race to climb to the top, we all lose ourselves to society little by little and we become but mere shadows. Following a set of rules, living in a repetitive cycle, living life in black and white and our minds caged from our true selves.  To break away from this, one must be different. One must choose to stand above all else, create a path for herself, show her true colors and look at the race from a different perspective. Think big no matter how small you are. Prove to yourself that you can be different from the rest and let the wind take you to your own path. Stop being an imitation and be your own shadow.

Is Cinemalaya still relevant?

Cinemalaya today is an outlet for young aspiring directors and media practitioners to express themselves and to showcase real Filipino experiences through the works of Filipino talents and through the movies. With the rampant and overpowering Western influence present in our culture, we are slowly losing track of the things that are truly us and we are slowly and unconsciously molding ourselves to fit in by trying to put together those two cultures. For some, Cinemalaya is merely an event where independent directors showcase their works because they are unable to show it in the mainstream public. While this description may seem to scratch the surface of what Cinemalaya truly is, it lacks the definition that it reveals to us what we are capable of doing and it lets us take a moment to look at the things that we have neglected due to fascination to the others, curiosity or simply ignorance. It sheds light onto the real happenings that occur in our society and the harsh reality that people usually sugarcoat and hide. These things like poverty, drug abuse, prostitution, political truth, corruption, lack of education and other occurrences are what these independent movies focus on for us to have social awareness. To answer the question, yes. Cinemalaya is still relevant because we Filipinos get to see what our fellow media practitioners can create within our community with a few peso bills, talented artists and a creative mind in their back pocket.

Lets's now hear it from Joross Gamboa, Writer Ricky Lee, and Director Jose Javier Reyes

Director Jose Javier Reyes.

He even gave us free 25tickets for his movie, Mga Munting Lihim

With all the influences being brought to us by the Westerners, it is important for every Filipino to be reminded of who we really are. Moreover, the fact that Cinemalaya gives chance not only to veteran directors to continue creating films but to young and new directors as well already makes it pertinent.
